Kinship care

Kinship carers are people related to or previously known to a child and offer short-term or permanent care. When a child first comes into care, we will talk to the birth parents to ascertain if there is anyone within their family network who may be able to care for their child. Kinship carers are approved foster carers just like mainstream carers and must undertake regular training to meet the national minimum standards of fostering. Some kinship carers may apply for a Special Guardianship Order if the child is to remain in their care. We have a specialist SGO (Special Guardianship Order team) who can support carers during this process and beyond.
